How often doyou really floss?

Let’s be honest — flossing is the step most people quietly skip. It feels fiddly, it’s easy to forget, and once you’ve brushed, it can feel like the job’s already done. But there’s a good reason your dentist keeps gently nudging you about it.
Your toothbrush, however good your technique, only reaches about 60% of each tooth. The surfaces in between — where plaque, bacteria and little bits of food love to gather — are left untouched unless you clean between your teeth. That’s exactly where decay and gum problems tend to start.
So how often is enough?
The simple answer is once a day. Not a frantic scrub the night before your next appointment, but a calm, thorough clean between every tooth as part of your normal routine. Whether you do it morning or night doesn’t really matter — consistency is what counts. One proper daily clean does far more for your gums than an occasional heroic effort.
But my gums bleed when I floss
This is one of the most common reasons people give up, so it’s worth clearing up. If your gums bleed when you first start flossing, it’s usually a sign they need more attention, not less. Bleeding often points to a little inflammation from plaque that’s been building up — and for most people, it settles down within a week or two of gentle, regular cleaning. If it doesn’t, that’s worth a conversation with us, as it can be an early sign of gum disease.
Not a fan of traditional floss?
You’re not alone, and the good news is that floss isn’t the only option. Interdental brushes — small, bristled brushes that slot between the teeth — are brilliant, especially if you find string floss awkward or have slightly larger gaps. Water flossers can help too. The best tool is simply the one you’ll actually use every day.
A small habit with a big payoff
Flossing takes a minute, but it protects the parts of your smile a brush can never reach. Over time, that daily minute means healthier gums, fewer problems in the gaps between teeth, and fresher breath — a genuinely good return for very little effort.
